It has been more than 100 days since Honduras underwent only the second coup in Central America since the end of the Cold War. The crisis has been portrayed as a personal standoff between Manuel Zelaya, the president who was flown out of the country in his pajamas at gunpoint, and Roberto Micheletti, the man who was sworn into power that very same day. As the country moves haltingly toward elections scheduled for the end of November, Fault Lines travelled to Honduras to learn more, and found that the polarisations run deeper and wider than an easy narrative of political rivalry. We ask what Honduras means for the tectonic shifts underway in Latin America, the influence of Hugo Chavez and the emerging policies of the Obama administration. More information about the video content bellow: 1. Christopher Columbus is said to have said after leaving behind a storm: “Thank God we’ve left these Depths.” And he called Depths (Honduras) the area, and Thank God (Gracias a Dios) the Cape he left. 2. Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras and seat of government of the Republic, along with its twin sister Comayagüela. Claimed on September 29, 1578 by the Spaniards, Tegucigalpa became the country's capital on October 30, 1880 under President Marco Aurelio Soto. The current Constitution of Honduras, enacted in 1982, names the sister cities of Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela as a Central District to serve as the permanent national capital. 3. The Honduran currency is the lempira, and it is named after an Indian chief that fought to death against the Spanish conquerors. It is assumed that a lempira bill has an image representing the face of the legendary chief Lempira, but instead contains the image of an American Red Indian. 4. Honduras is located in the waist or isthmus that links North America with South America, and it was the result of the clash of these two landmasses. If not for the existence of the Central American isthmus, in which Honduras is in the middle, sea currents would have taken other directions, the weather had been different in Africa, and humans would not have evolved as they did. 5. In Yoro there is the phenomenon of fish rain (lluvia de peces). Literally, fish fall from the sky. The explanation generally offered for the rain of fish is meteorological, often speculated to be strong winds or waterspouts (fishnados). 6. One of the most intriguing events of Honduras are the Sawdust Alfombras of Comayagua. On Good Friday morning, Comayagua locals use colored sawdust to create religious scenes on public streets. Teams of locals work together for hours to create the intricate images but these same images are stamped out immediately when the local priest takes out a procession marking the Stations of the Cross. This is a wonderful event to view and of course, the Easter celebrations that come on the following Sunday are an event to behold as well. 7. Honduras has one of the most complex and intricate biospheres in the world. The tropical forests contain some of the rarest plants, animals and birds in the world. The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve in particular is a UNESCO heritage site and a must-visit even if you don’t like animals, plants, and birds! The site is also home to more than 2000 indigenous tribes that still follow their traditional lifestyle in the biosphere. Honduras is a country divided by economic disparity, and members of the tiny group of families that hold the country in their powerful grip speak to Fault Lines. Social movements are also mobilising in the streets, standing up to repression not just to bring their president back, but to re-found their nation on more equal terms.
